Quick Looks

Manufacturer: Fantastic Plastic
Name: Soviet LK Moon Lander
Scale: 1:48
Kit contents: 90 resin parts
resin base
61 photoetched parts
clear acetate
styrene rod
instruction sheet
Comments: The resin parts are beautifully cast, with crisp details and a smooth surface finish. There is some flash on the parts, but no visible air holes. All parts are still attached to their pour plugs. The landing gear struts in my kit are a little warped, but should straighten out in some hot water. Clear acetate is included for the windows, but no interior is provided. Styrene rod, wire and monofilament are to be cut and used for struts and antennae. The decal sheet includes a Soviet flag to go with the cosmonaut figure and resin base. The instruction sheet includes a short program history, generic tips on working with resin parts, a description of the CD-ROM contents and tips for working with the decals. The step-by-step assembly instructions are on the CD-ROM and consist of a series of jpg images using actual CAD drawings from which the kit was designed. You'll have to match the part shapes with the drawings, as there is no parts list or other callouts for the resin parts. There is an image showing all the parts laid out, so you can make sure all your parts are included, though. The photoetched parts are called out by the numbers etched next to the part. Alternate schemes are shown, depending on which version you want to model (early or late) and in what configuration (landing or ascent). Schemes and configurations are identified by the file name. The CD also includes photos of the few existing LK mock-ups and prototypes for use as decal references. You'll have to come up with a painting scheme of your own, though, as none is included. I recommend http://www.russianspaceweb.com/lk.html which gives names to many of the kit parts and is a really nice reference page for the LK.
