This kit builds into both the orbiter and lander portions of the Viking Mars probe. The orbiter model includes the aeroshell that contained the lander prior to its being released after reaching Martian orbit. The vacuformed parts need to be cut from their sheets and trimmed to fit, as is usual for vacuformed parts. They represent the aeroshell, bioshield, sunshade, and the orbiter's high gain antenna and bottom cover. The resin parts are beautifully molded, with crisp details, especially on the lander's descent engines. All resin parts need to be removed from their pour plugs, and some of the smaller parts will need to have some minor flash removed. The only airhole I can see on my parts is a rather large one on the orbiter's main engine nozzle. Other than that, no airholes are visible in the resin parts. The white metal parts make up most of the landing gear and some of the lander's instrumentation booms. The tubes and styrene parts are to be used to build additional parts for both the lander and orbiter. The photoetched parts are called out by numbers on the instruction sheet and provide the solar panel supports along with antenna and instrumentation details. The solar cells are represented by black diffraction foil that looks really keen. Step by step text and graphical instructions build the kit by subassembly. Each instruction step includes color callouts for the parts, but you'll probably also want to consult additional reference material. You'll also need to see additional references for routing the wire if you really want to detail the lander. I can suggest the Viking Lander photographs as a start. A decal placement guide is also included in the instructions.
