First Lunar Landing
These photos show two different dioramas of the same subject. The
bases were created in the following manner: Don used Durabond on 1/8"
plywood as the base. He then sprayed the entire surface flat black
and masked off the shadows using 16mm poly. He positioned himself at
the point where the sun would be shining and sprayed a fine mist of
gray auto primer, slowing building up the paint so as to have sunlight
on one side of the rocks and shadow on the other side. To make
craters and other features he filled a large paint brush with water
and flicked it at the base from a distance of about 5 feet just as the
Durabond was starting to set up.
For the 'you are there' photos, Don used a split and painted ping-pong
ball for the earth. To bring out the wrinkles in the space suits,
they were first painted flat black, then dry brushed matte white until
he got his desired effect.
