From the caption accompanying illustration: Astronauts embark on lunar exploration After completion of the LRV loading and checkout, the astronauts begin the first of their three lunar surface expeditions. Although the LRV will travel more than 20 miles during the three traverses, it will never be more than 5 miles from the LM. On the first expedition Scott and Irwin will range along the edge of Hadley Rille, a 1000 foot deep, three-quarters of a mile wide valley, and down to the base of the 10,000 foot Apennine mountain. The second expedition will explore the Apennine front in greater detail. The third traverse will range over to the west of the landing site, along Hadley Rille to the north, over to a volcanic-like area called the North Complex, and then back to the LM. |
