This model of the Soyuz booster represents the standard manned launch vehicle for the Soviet/Russian space program. Continuous improvements of the spacecraft have led to the current Soyuz TM series, first launched with a crew in February 1987. The Soyuz launch vehicle was derived from the original Vostok booster. A more powerful upper stage and the addition of an escape tower are the major changes.
