Quick Looks

Manufacturer: RealSpace Models
Name: Saturn 1 Block 2
Scale: 1:144
Kit contents: 47 resin pieces
5 photoetched parts
8 brass tubes
strip styrene
Comments: This kit contains parts to build one of the last five flight articles of the Saturn 1 Block 2 configuration: the SA-6 thru SA-10 missions that launched boilerplate Apollo capsules and the Pegasus satellites (SA-8 thru SA-10). The resin parts are molded with crisp details, finely engraved panel lines and a smooth surface finish. All parts, with the exceptions of the first stage cluster cap and launch escape rocket, need to be removed from their pour plugs: the instructions show what material must be removed for most of the parts. There is a minor amount of flash around some parts (particularly the fins and RCS thrusters) and some airholes that need to be filled. The brass tubes fit into the bottom shroud part around a central resin core piece that also fits into the keyed bottom shroud part. The engine mount part has nicely molded detail, including rivets and thermal shielding. The first stage engine nozzles are hollow. You won't be needing all of the parts on one of the frets: only the second stage antenna part is used. The instruction sheet consists of multi-step exploded assembly drawings with text details, along with a four-view painting and decaling guide. However, the instructions fail to mention where to put the first stage fill and drain ports. The parts are included, but you'll have to consult other references for their locations. Also, the total height of the vehicle for the Pegasus missions (SA-8 thru SA-10) was 24.687 inches less than the previous two missions, so if you want to be truly accurate when modeling any of the Pegasus shots you should remove an additional 0.171 inches (4.35 millimeters) from the bottom of the payload piece and sand off the raised circular detail as well as omit the RCS thrusters. The photoetched parts comprise the launch escape tower when folded properly. The box cover has a photo of the completed and painted kit representing an SA-6 or SA-7 flight.
