Quick Looks

Manufacturer: RealSpace Models
Name: Saturn 1 Block 2
Scale: 1:144
Kit contents: 42 resin pieces
8 brass tubes
strip styrene
Comments: This kit contains parts to build the first flight article of the Saturn 1 Block 2 configuration: the SA-5 mission. The resin parts are molded with crisp details and a smooth surface finish. All parts, with the exception of the first stage cluster cap, need to be removed from their pour plugs: the instructions show what material must be removed for most of the parts. There is a minor amount of flash around some parts (particularly the fins) and some airholes that need to be filled. The brass tubes fit into the bottom shroud part around a central resin core piece that also fits into the keyed bottom shroud part. The engine mount part has nicely molded detail, including rivets and thermal shielding. The first stage engine nozzles are hollow. There's some nice detail molded into the bottom of the second stage part, with the open scallops allowing the molded-in-place engine nozzles to be viewed. You won't be needing all of the parts on one of the frets: only the second stage antenna part is used. The instruction sheet consists of multi-step exploded assembly drawings with text details, along with a four-view painting and decaling guide. However, the instructions fail to mention where to apply the first stage fill and drain ports. The parts are included, but you'll have to consult other references for their locations. The box cover has a photo of the completed and painted kit. If you look at it closely enough, you'll see the ports at the base of the rocket.
