Project Mercury Photos
Unmanned Capsules
This capsule was production vehicle number 14 that flew aboard two
Little Joe tests (flights 5A and 5B). While it was a production
vehicle, it was not manrated. It did verify the production capsule's
ability to handle max Q abort situations. The capsule was on display
in the Virginia Air and Space Center in Hampton, Virginia.
Mercury/Redstone Capsule
This capsule flew on the first Mercury/Redstone flights, both the aborted MR-1 "flight" (2 inches of altitude before engine shutdown) and the successful MR-1A flight. The capsule
was on display at Spaceport USA (the Kennedy Space Center Visitor's
Center) in Florida.
Ham's Capsule
This is the capsule that the chimpanzee Ham flew aboard the flight of
MR-2. It was on display at the California Museum of Science and
Industry in Los Angeles. The stencil markings on the spacecraft are
from recovery force training exercises.
