This kit depicts a proposed heavy lift launcher to replace the cancelled Ares program. Parts are provided to depict either a cargo or crewed version of the rocket. Most of the resin parts are hollow and lightweight. The base of the core and each SRB, though, is a solid chunk of resin which should make a nice stable model. The parts are packed into separate labeled bags for easy identification, which is good, because several of the parts are very similar and could be mixed up if you're not careful. The resin parts have crisp details and a slightly rough surface finish. The cylindrical parts have seams that need some attention. There are some molding gunges of varying severity on some of the parts and all of the mating surfaces will need cleanup. Bulkheads and engines for the second stage are included in case you want to make the stages separable. The instruction sheet includes a parts list and text assembly steps for the straightforward assembly process. Inkjet printed decals are provided for the proposed marking scheme. No painting or marking guide is included: a link to the DIRECT web site (http://www.directlauncher.com/) is noted, but that link now appears to be dead. Fortunately, the scheme is on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DIRECT.
