USAF Space Program
The MOL stands just under three feet tall (You can get a sense of
scale from the second photo). The tubes for the main bodes are 2-1/2"
Plexiglas. Glenn turned the repeating parts like the SRB cones and
aft skirts and made molds. The final parts were cast in resin. The
"truck" (the brown section on the X-20) was the most difficult part to
make, since it's a very odd shpae. The roll markings are made with a
thin artist vinyl, which is neater and faster than masking and
painting. Unless someone gets really close you can't tell it's not
paint. The stripes and checkers are laser output onto a thin
plastic-like paper that has an adhesive backing. The bases are poplar
with a mahogany stain. These models will be on display at the USAF
Space Museum at Cape Canaveral. The big smile on Glenn's face is
because he finally finished the models!
