LRV Deployment Sequence

Scott and Irwin complete the deployment sequence by erecting the remaining LRV components, including the seats, and release the LRV from the LM.

The deployed LRV is about 10 feet long, 6 feet wide, 45 inches high and has a 7-1/2 foot wheel base. Each of the four wheels is powered by an individual electric motor and both the forward and the rear wheels turn for steering.

After the deployment has been completed, tools, experiments and other payload are placed on the vehicle. Although the LRV weighs only about 500 lbs., it is able to support a total payload of approximately 1000 lbs., including the two astronauts and their life support equipment. Therefore, its total weight on the surface is approximately 1500 lbs.
